  1. Call of Kthalia

This is not a particularly beautiful table/desk, but it has so perfectly met my needs that I can’t help but rate it 5 enthusiastic stars. I got this table to serve as the desk to my laptop. When I went from desktop computer to laptop, I found I was sitting in bed a lot with it rather than at my desk. Doing this meant I didn’t need a big desk somewhere, and so I set about finding how to get comfy computing from bed. I had tried a few things, from a cooling mat, to a folding lap desk to a cheapish plastic lap desk with a beanbag bottom (the latter of which I still use for other things, like my mouse, tablet, etc.) but I was having trouble making this 1. Comfortable 2. Accommodating to my large and powerful laptop while in use and having it also be easy to put someplace else out of the way 3. Affordable 4. Not heinously ugly. After going through the formerly mentioned small lapdesks, finding them too small, rickity, unwieldy and annoying to find a home for them when not in use on my bed I thought of these medical bed tables. It seemed like the perfect fit to give me a small, functional, mobile desk for my laptop AND a drink/snack, so I set about looking at reviews, checking prices, etc. This table was the cheapest while maintaining a high level of satisfaction among it’s owners, a low reported incidence of manufacturing defects and unlike some other similar tables – this one was reported as being EASY to put together rather than annoying, confusing, convoluted, etc. I decided to try it. I am SO glad that I did and here is why:1. Okay, top of the list, at $59.99 this table is one of the cheapest units you will find that also doesn’t have a lot of bad reviews proclaiming it to be a piece of junk. If the table is decent, does what you need and costs $60 instead of $100-$300 then… ding! ding! ding! We have a winner. Well, as I will go on to explain: We have a winner!2. This was easy as pie to install. There is a small guide. It’s pretty straight forward. Only word of caution: Don’t undo the shipping screw, point the metal support at ANYTHING of value (head, dog, vase, etc.) and hit the table adjustment lever. This seems obvious, but they kinda don’t mention it and I thought I would do that just so someone doesn’t come back and post “You never told me I’d put my eye out!!”. Well, I did. Don’t put your eye out, okay? But other than that this is easy to assemble. It took me 15 minutes, or less. I needed a mid-size phillips head screwdriver to tighten the six screws that hold the support beam to the table top and and a small/mid-sized wrench to tighten the two bolts that hold the support beam to the base. I say “mid-size” because that is how not technical with tools I am. I know some tool names. I can usually put things together better than my other family members, in part due to patience, but I often ask the boyfriend to tighten it all down at the end. And I am 99% confident almost anyone can put this together in under 30 minutes.3. It really is easy to use. It rolls well enough, even on carpet. I swing it over and away from the bed a few times a day and out at the end of the night when I go to sleep. I adjust the top to right above my legs or up to the highest notch depending on what I am doing, and it is so easy to adjust with the lever. Although I cannot one-hand lift, I know this is because my laptop weighs 8 lbs. It lifts one-handed when my laptop and other junk isn’t on it, and yet it easily two-hand lifts with all my doo-dahs on the topper. To lower you simply lift the lever and press down. To lock it – up or down – just move to the desired level and lift a little until you hear the snap. If that’s too high – or low – readjust and snap in place again.4. It seems of decent quality. It’s a laminate, particle board top, sure. It isn’t a piece of Ethan Allen furniture, but it cost $59.99. And for that price point I have gotten bookcases with a surprise! CARDBOARD backing that during assembly, you tack on the back of the case. Now that’s cheap and cheesy! On the other hand, while not fancy-pants, this is a nice little table. There are no manufacturing errors. All the pieces went together right. It rolls right. It doesn’t wobble too much considering it’s a desk with one leg and a hefty laptop on the other end of it. It goes up and down smoothly. It looks pretty decent given it’s welded, chromed metal and laminate-topped particle board. Price to quality, I am 110% satisfied, would buy again, will recommend! :-)So bottom line, I love this little table desk. It works perfectly for me. I was excited to get it. Happy how it went together. Thrilled to start using it and I’ve been happy with it each and every day for the last couple weeks. If anything changes, breaks, etc. I will be sure to update the review. If things go as planned I will probably still come back to update how it’s going.Until then I leave you with these thoughts: The table size is listed, but part of the topper is over the side of the base beam. This means the table doesn’t go halfway across a queen size bed, for example. If you want something like that you will need to find a longer table. And probably a sturdier one to hold such weight farther out like that. Also, though the table isn’t huge and doesn’t span the bed, it holds a lot of stuff! Mine holds my 17.3″ laptop, the laptop chilly mat it sits on, my drink, a snack, my phone and phone holder, my tablet and/or a book! I could probably scootch stuff to the other side and fit a mouse, but when I do use a mouse I actually just put that on the tiny plastic lap desk with the bean bag bottom and that works for me. I went ahead and took some photos of my desk set up to give you an idea of how much stuff fits on it, the space under it and above the bed (our bed is I think 30-32″ give or take with blankets, etc. and the desk is at about 38-39″ on the underside while at max) and how far across our queen that it goes while hitting the side rails. Oh, and the picture with my leg – I am not skinny at 5’5″ and 150lbs with decidedly NOT chicken legs – so that is a good bit of space! I can sit cross-legged or even with my knees up when the table is at max. Of course this room will vary according to the height of your bed/couch/whatever and the size of your body but I hope this provides some reference. 🙂 (UPDATE 02/24/16: For some reason my pics never posted. I reposted and they still haven’t shown. Not sure why as I post pics all the time, but perhaps this item has too many images attached already and we aren’t privy to the threshold? Anyhow, wanted to mention this as it’s a bit annoying, and makes my review inaccurate without explanation.)I love this desk! And I hope this review helped. Feel free to ask questions if you have them and best of luck to you!UPDATE 03/02/2019: Still love and use this desk absolutely everyday. It is sturdy and besides getting dusty all the time, since we live in the desert, once cleaned it looks like new. I now use this daily as my work desk because I have been working from home due to falling quite ill. This desk is a great help, and when I am not using it for work I am using it to watch movies on my laptop with my bearded dragon pet. I like the desk so well that when I began using a second monitor regularly at home – which is really a necessity if you do complex computer tasking – I decided to get a second desk to go on the other side of the bed so I can stop hulking my monitor on and off the box I have set up on the bed each day. I am excited for it to get here. I know having two will make a perfectly functional whole desk across my queen bed for work. Hope this helps and good luck!

I am really happy with this table. The first one I ordered arrived damaged, but it seemed that it most likely was damaged during shipping. I initiated a return through Galenus Medical, and Galenus Medical shipped a new one immediately. I wanted to have the table available for when I came home from having shoulder surgery, so this did delay things by a couple of days. I should have just ordered it sooner, but I guess I took my time comparing models and making my mind up what to purchase. Anyhow, sorry, on to the product. It’s very nice. My husband said it was pretty easy to assemble.. I was in the room with him while he put it together, and it didn’t take him too long at all. It looks nice. It says it has a weight limit of 45 pounds, so keep that in mind if that will be an issue for you. I use it to hold my laptop, medications, kleenex, a beverage, odds and ends like that, so it’s very sufficient. I find the surface space large enough for the most part. I use it to eat my meals as well, so I do find that I have to remove my laptop then. It’s either remove the laptop or remove the smaller things that are on the table so that I have room to eat, and it’s easier to just remove the laptop. I love having the maneuverability of the wheels. With my shoulder surgery, I needed to be able to move this easily, and I can. I sit on a reclining sofa, and the table nicely tucks under the extended footrest portion once I am seated. That gets the table nice and close to me and makes things so convenient. I haven’t used this in my bed yet, but the height of the table is adjustable, so it would work as a table you can use in bed. As far as complaints of others that this tips over: yes, I can see where it could. I have not had that happen. As with anything, you must use reasonable care. This is not the same quality as a hospitable table that you use in an actual hospitable. To get something of that quality and sturdiness, you would have to pay much more than what you are paying for this. I paid in the fifty-some dollar range for this. I got what I paid for, and I am happy with the quality I received for that price. You have to look at it once you have it assembled and notice the way the table is offset. That will help you to realize that if you were to push it away from you in a certain way, it could be tippy. Keeping that in mind, and using care, I have not had any issues or even had it come close to tipping. Really, this has been such a big help in my recovery, I am so glad I had the foresight to purchase it. I recommend this to anyone who is facing surgery or bedridden, or if you know someone who is or will be facing that. It’s just a small thing that can make life easier.
