I needed a temporary support bar in the shower. After looking through various models available I decided on this one. After reading several other reviews I almost didn’t purchase but am glad that I ignored those. Let me start off by saying that if you need a full body weight support do not even consider any brand or make of the suction cup style. If you do you are setting yourself up for false security and potential future injuries. Due to a broke ankle I just needed a stabilizing support bar as I get in and out of the shower. I found out through trial and error that the suction cups hold like super glue if installed correctly. Don’t put over any seams, cracks, or tile joints. This will allow air to seep in and release the suction. I have 4″ tiles and found out that by angling the bar I could get each end fully in the middle of the tile. To fully seal pull the little lever up and then push the bar in before setting the lever back. It will get really hard to set the lever back down but believe me if you do this way the suction is super strong and will hold up. Next thing before each use is to test the bar by pushing sideways and pulling. If the suction has let loose a little bit this will tell you. I’ve only had to reset the bar twice since I had been using it over the last month. Since I cleaned the tile that it sets on and push in on the handle before setting the lever it hasn’t released. Lastly, while trying to figure out exactly where to place I had one side stuck good and the opposite side not. I can easily see trying to get the really stuck side loose by just manhandling it off but if suction is strong you will break the cup off (another reviewer posted pictures of this). I find this is a good product if installed and used correctly.

We got this to be safer when exiting the shower, gives more stability. You just need to make double sure you read the directions and install it correctly. My brother didn’t do that because he’s too impatient and it came off when he grabbed for it. He did not put it directly on the tile only. He put it half on the smooth tile and half on the grout line, which did not give it a strong suction seal. We installed it correctly and ours has been working perfectly, no problems.

Like several other elderly aid gizmos I purchased recently, I had low expectations for this product. Every time I tried to use a suction device in the shower, it fell off after a few days. In the middle of the night you’d hear a loud clunk and rattle, then find the suction cup and whatever it was supposed to be holding lying in the tub. But I desperately needed something for my parents’ shower and the little grip my brother-in-law screwed into the tile by the tub was simply inadequate (measured about the same width as your pinky to thumb, if you stretch them out “Texas hook ’em horns” style). This grip, however, is nice and large and made of grippable rubber AND the suction cups work like a charm. As a rule, with suction cups, it’s easy on, easy off. Most suction cups go on really easy and that’s the problem — they fall right off. This one takes a bit of pressure to secure (you pull the green tabs up on one end, like a soda can, then press the suction cups against the tile wall and press the green tabs back in place). I had to show my 87 year old mom how to do it and she struggled a bit, but got it. However, once on, it stayed solid. NOTE: if you are using this for the elderly, warn them that they should ALWAYS check any suction device before trusting it to hold their weight. It’s easy to do, just grab the handle and jiggle it. If it feels solid, it’s good to go. If it eventually comes off, it will need to be re-applied (which is why I showed mom how to do it). In short, she loves it and asked me to buy her another for the other side of the shower. Men, who tend to have greater hand grip strength would have no problem at all. Update 11-12. Approx one month after we put it in place, it is still holding strong. I noticed some other reviewers said that theirs did not. My guess is that they are trying to apply the cup over a line of grout. Do not do this, it will not hold. It must rest 90% on tile. If you have very small tiles, it probably won’t work. We have 4″ and it works fine.
