I wanted a wheel chair that was extremely portable, which meant light and foldable. At the same time it had to be durable and sturdy. The chair when folded had to fit in the hatch back storage area of a Fiat 500, even with the rear seats up and in use. The chair needed to be thin to be able to go through old doorways that may not be very wide. Another small detail, is not having the arms in the way when the rider wants to eat at the dinner table. There was also the maneuverability aspect…you need bigger wheels unless you are just using it inside. Most important, a wheel chair has to be comfortable for the rider. If you are looking for something similar, the Drive Medical Fly Lite Ultra Lightweight Transport Wheelchair may be the solution for your needs. The following are the noteworthy points:1) As far as portability, I was looking for a transporter so not having large rear wheels made it even more portable. The leg rests fold to the side or can be easily removed for even more portability. The back unlocks and folds down to decrease the height. For those who are wondering, the back rest locks are of good quality and appear very secure and sturdy so far. A tug on the seat handles bring the two sides together. It’s about 10 inches thick when the sides are collapsed together.2) You’ll notice in the picure that the arms are static, but recessed. The riders body can be closer to the dining room table. This feature also makes it easier for the rider to get in and out of the chair. Not as convenient as folding or removable sides, but good enough in my opinion.3)The wheels seem sturdy although I will have to update on how long they will last. You guys may run with your baby stroller or your dog,..I take my mom. lol.4) The foot rest adjust vertically only. My mom did not need angle adjustment since she was not in a cast.5) The aluminum brakes are actually very well designed and constructed. This was a deal breaker for me when I was considering a less expensive model.6) the chair is really comfortable since your a practically sitting in a hammock. For extensive use, get a seat cushion. The https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B00RVC4WKO/ref=oh_aui_detailpage_o06_s00?ie=UTF8&psc=1 compliments the chair nicely and is reasonably priced.7) Other notable pluses are an included tool kit, a velcro sealed pouch and smaller netted pouch in the back seat. The Drive Medical Fly Lite Ultra Lightweight Transport Wheelchair arrives folded in the box with the leg rest unattached and is otherwise fully assembled. Oh, did I mention that the shipping weight was only 20 lbs.

I initially wanted this transport chair for myself to use on vacation. After a spinal fusion, and now additional issues with my back, the time I can stand or walk around is very limited. I will admit, I was hesitant to purchase this one because of some of the less than stellar reviews. As it turns out, I ended up using this for my 81 year old dad, who is experiencing a lot of pain walking due to a vascular issue. It was becoming near to impossible to get him from the front porch to the car, not to mention in and out of doctors offices for his many appointments. Now my dad is very stubborn and scoffed at the mention of a wheelchair…well I told him this was mine, but he’s welcome to borrow it. Both he and my mom thought this chair was just the neatest thing on earth! Now some details about the actual chair…the leg pieces are extremely easy to get off and on, the foot rests are just plastic — but they do their job and actually stay up when you flip them up. The leg pieces swing away easily so you can move the person out of the chair without them restricting movement (they are also adjustable for leg length). The rest of the chair is in one piece…kind of like the bag chair of transport chairs! When it’s open and you want it closed, fold the back rest down then simply grasp the 2 handles on the seat and pull upwards…voila!…it’s closed. I was able to just hold the handles and roll it along next to me like a piece of rolling luggage. It is lightweight, at least easy enough for me to handle, and fits behind the drivers seat of my VW Jetta. I will repeat…easy in…easy out! You do need to stand behind the chair just to steady it and add support for the person as they sit in it — if you do this simple step, there is no tipping backwards. I’m not very strong and all I had to do was stand behind it and steady it (Dad is 5’9, 160lbs). My dad said it was a smooth ride and I had no trouble pushing the chair over various bumps/cracks in pavement or those metal floor pieces in doorways. Maneuvering around tight office spaces was easy and smooth too. For those who complained about the brakes…I think you’re doing it wrong — I only flipped them into place, but one of the nurses at a dr we visited did an extra push and that fully engaged the brakes in place. So, you actually must apply a little extra pressure to the lever and that does the trick. Aesthetically, this is an attractive chair…very nice shade of cobalt blue plaid with a dark pink/purple running through…frame is a dark blue. There is a cell phone pocket on the back as well as a velcro pouch (I put the tool packet in there). So in conclusion, I highly recommend this chair if you’re looking for a lightweight, easy to handle transport chair that can fit in the back seat of your car! It doesn’t get easier than this.
