   Thinking In The Dark – November 5, 2024

   
   I recently hurt my back pretty bad and decided to get a walker to help me get around. I thought I was getting a champagne colored walker, but mine turned out to be a dull silver, which I actually prefer.ASSEMBLY:First off, I want to say that this was pretty easy to put together. There is an instruction manual and even a screw driver with some extra screws in addition to all the parts. The handles and wheels are easy to attach and adjust using the plastic headed screw bolts (sorry, not sure exactly what these are called!). The screwdriver is only needed to secure the back rest with the screws that are already in it. There are two velcro cable ties that are attached to the brake cables, which you can use to secure them to the frame so they aren’t flying out to the sides.FEATURES:Even though they are not padded, the handles are ergonomic and comfortable. The brakes only affect the two wheels in the back (closest to where you would be walking). To use them you just push the bottom part of the handles down until they lock in place. I love that the seat lifts up to reveal a storage area. There is a strip of material that hangs across this; it functions as a way to pull up on the hinges of the walker to collapse it easily. Some people may find that it gets in the way of the storage area.USE:This thing glides sooooo well on most surfaces. It’s very smooth and the wheels feel very durable. The breaks are easy to squeeze. They need to be locked before sitting so the walker doesn’t slide from underneath you. The padded seat is wide and really nice, but some people may find it a bit too firm. The back rest is the only thing that really bugs me. It’s not at a good angle when sitting on the seat and digs into my ribs a bit. It doesn’t feel too comfortable, but it’s good for safety,I guess. It also got squashed a bit so it’s skewed to one side, but it should straighten out in time with use. Folding the walker is easy, although it may not compact enough to fit into smaller spaces.THE GOOD:- Easy assembly- Adjustable height- Easy to use- Smooth movement- Has storage area- Has ability to fold – it’s portable- Wide seat with backrest- Reflective strips on front wheelsTHE BAD (or not so bad):- Seat may be too hard for some people- Backrest may not work well for some people- May be hard to fit through small doorways- Storage area is open underneath seat- Pull strip might get in the way of storage area under seat- Does not fold down too compactlyFINAL THOUGHTS:This walker is not just for seniors. People with mobility issues, back problems, or disabilities would find this walker very useful as well. It seems to have quality parts, and it’s very functional. Whether or not it would work for you depends on your needs and the qualifications this walker can fulfill. Although some things could be improved, I’m really impressed by this. For the price (currently around $90) it’s designed well and works great.

   I think this Homland rollator has one thing really holding it back: The plastic levers are kinda creaky and flex a bit. There is a good bit of plastic like on the knobs and plastic washers (which the manual mistakenly described as rubber). The break levers take a bit of force to pull them down to lock them for sitting, though the breaks seem secure as a result. Squeezing them while walking isn’t anywhere near as hard though.I found a rusty red substance inside one of the part bags, as if water got it and it had rusted a bit before ordering. They warn you that it is not waterproof and can rust if exposed to moisture from shower, rain etc. The outer covering is painted to help protect it, though rain and etc can get into the adjustment holes and rust it from the inside.The metal poles seem reasonably thick and stable when locked. Moving from seated to standing position was no issue when putting weight on the handles to pull myself up. I weigh about 195-205, and was able to put my full weight on the handles, lifting my feet off the ground. It took a bit of work to tighten the handles so they didn’t wobbleThey explicitly warn you about many things that can be summed up as this: Use it only on a flat floor and do not use it on inclines, escalators, or to travel over curbs. They also warn you not to use it to get to a standing position from the floor if you’ve fallen over.Assembly can be an issue. It was pretty well labeled and easy enough to figure out, though the elderly or those with reduced strength might need help. It’s a bit heavy and can require some hand strength to assemble and tighten the knobs. It does come with two spare knobs, one for the wheel legs and one for the handles. The break cable comes pre-installed to the handles and rear wheels, so you wont have to manually install and adjust them.The knobs mean it’s a bit of work to adjust, you can’t just press a pin in and slide the handle/wheels until they lock. Instead, you have to pull the entire knob and pin out and slide them back through again at the desired height. You also have to watch out for the plastic washer, which you are likely to lose if your not being careful.The wheels rolled smoothly, though the casters had a bit of resistance when turning it left or right. This seems to help keep it from rolling around at random angles. The wheels are nice and big, rolling over socks and articles of clothing if needed.It also includes a screwdriver to lock the fabric back rest into place after sliding it into the slots. It seemed secure enough without the screws, though it’s an option for added safety. It was also reasonably comfortable on my back, flexing to conform to me as long as I slid back into it. It doesn’t strike me as the safest thing to lean back in though.The included bag attaches with snaps so you can remove it if you don’t like it. It’s only rated for carrying 5 pounds according to the manual, though didn’t strike me as being flimsy.I nearly knocked it down to 3 stars over the rust-like substance in the bag and all the plastic. It’s also a good bit pricier than the competition, so the cheap feeling parts isn’t the best impression. It seems sturdy and comfortable though.

   This review is for the following item: Foldable Rollator Walkers with Seat for Seniors, 8” Big Wheels, 350 lb. Weight Capacity, Adjustable Handles and Seat Height, Lightweight Rolling Walker, BlueThis is my first walker by Homland and I did run into some aspects that I did not care for.First off the assembly is pretty simple, BUT you must put each wheel on using the plastic star shaped handle knobs. There is no push button adjustments for this rollator. And there are no numbers stamped on the parts to make it easy to see that you have each wheel at the same height. So once you have it all together, there is a good chance you are going to be taking it all apart again to adjust the walker for your height.The seat is fairly nice in size and it is padded. Not as soft as your couch, but much more comfortable than a hard wooden bench.I did not need to adjust the brakes, they worked fine. To use the brakes when you are walking, you pull up on the brake handle. When you want to stop and sit, you push down on the brake handles, which locks the brakes. Now you can sit down with no fear of the walker rolling away. When you are ready to resume walking, lift up on the brake handles, and that will release the brakes and you are good to start your journey again.I did find the backrest to be oddly placed. It is at a weird angle and digs in. It is a soft backrest, but still is uncomfortable because of the odd angle that it is placed at.I did receive 1 extra small size knob and 1 extra long knob. Also included is 2 tiny screws that you will screw into each side of the backrest, keeping it in place. The screwdriver is also included.This is a basic rolling walker. You do not get a cup holder or cane holder.The walker appears to be very sturdy and rolls well on carpet, tile floors and cement. I did not take it out onto the lawn as it is raining.Because this walker is not easy to adjust the height of the wheels or the handles, I probably wouldn’t order this one again if I needed another. It took too much time to get all the sides at an equal height each time I was trying to adjust it to my height. Now if my husband wanted to use it, we would have to take it all apart and start over again so it would work for his height. Just too time consuming for me.But for a sturdy rollator that doesn’t break the bank, this one isn’t bad.
